  • Halloween Safety and Fun

The following information has been provided by Norfolk Police:

We would like to remind residents that with Halloween soon approaching there are a few safety steps that can be taken, whether you are staying in and do not wish to be called upon or if your children are taking part in ‘Trick and Treating’.

    • ‘Trick and Treat not welcome’ posters will soon be available from Great Yarmouth Police Station’s front office. These are for residents who do not wish to be called upon during the evening of Halloween. They can be easily displayed in a front window to discourage Trick and Treating.  Please call 101 and ask for a poster to be dropped off to you or visit the desk at Yarmouth Police Station to pick one up.
    • Posters for ‘Trick or Treaters Welcome’    ‘Not Welcome’  and for shops can be downloaded from here: Norfolk Police Website
      • If you can, take time to check on vulnerable neighbours and relatives.
      • If your children are taking part in Trick and Treating please reinforce some guidelines for calling at neighbouring addresses:
      • Please do not allow children to call at homes which are displaying ‘Trick or Treat not welcome’ posters
      • Please do not allow children to call at sheltered housing complexes or care homes
      • Please remind children that throwing eggs and flour at property is not permitted and could result in calls to police for criminal damage or anti-social behaviour
      • Please accompany young children
      • Please remind children not to enter the homes of strangers even if invited to
      • Remind children of road safety; the clocks go back on October 25 so the evenings will be darker

Local shops will be encouraged not to sell eggs and flour to children in the run up to Halloween and community officers will be patrolling locally during the evening.

  • Oil Tank Security

Police are urging home owners and businesses to review and check the security of their fuel oil tanks as this is the time of year when fuel thieves become more active as tanks are topped up for the winter.

We are starting to see this criminal activity in our area but by introducing some basic security measures you can improve your chances of not being a victim. Generally the thief will often just drop a hose into an unlocked tank and let it drain or sometimes they drill holes into the sides of tanks. This type of attack will cause additional damage and potential soil pollution if the fuel spills onto the ground. Thieves often strike during the hours of darkness to avoid detection, so we encourage you to do the following:

    • Check & record your tank levels and keep the tank securely locked against opportunist thieves
    • Keep your tank unobstructed and in view of the house or business where you can plainly see anyone who shouldn’t be there
    • Consider protecting the tank with security lighting to deter an attack at night, permitting you to identify suspicious activity early
    • Consider fitting a Secured by Design, Police Approved fuel alarm to protect your tank and its valuable contents
    • Keep a watch out for your neighbours if they too have a fuel tank. The more eyes watching the better to deter or identify the thief
    • Please report suspicious activity on 101, but if you think a crime is in progress then call the Police immediately on 999

A group of residents from Repps-cum-Bastwick gathered to witness Cllrs. Mary and Barry Coleman fix a plaque to the new bench located on the A149 at the junction with Tower Road. The bench had been purchased from the councillors’ ward budgets to replace the previous, dilapidated seat. It is a very well used facility and is the third bench in this spot, the original, as the plaque states, being donated by the parishioners in May 1935 to commemorate the Jubilee of King George V. The land on which it stands was presented to the parish at the time by Julius Starling Esq. 2015 is considered a suitable year in which to remember the history of the village, by replacing the seat, and honour Queen Elizabeth II
